Context and Overview

This micro-credential provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of energy efficiency, the circular economy, and smart building technologies within the built environment. It explores how these concepts are essential to reducing environmental impact, cutting energy consumption, and achieving the European Union’s climate neutrality goals by 2050, as outlined in the European Green Deal and the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. It is designed for professionals and learners seeking to enhance their knowledge of sustainable construction practices, retrofitting methods, and the integration of renewable energy solutions. Learners will gain a clear understanding of how energy-efficient design, retrofitting strategies, and smart systems integration can contribute to sustainable development across the building lifecycle — from design and construction to renovation and operation. The course combines European policy frameworks with technical and practical insights, offering an applied understanding of how innovation and sustainability intersect in the construction sector.

Learning Objectives

On the completion of the micro-credential, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the main concepts of energy efficiency and the circular economy, particularly in the context of buildings.
  • Understand key EU policies, directives, and strategies related to energy efficiency and sustainability.
  • Identify financing and funding opportunities available for green transition projects.
  • Apply assessment tools for evaluating energy efficiency and environmental performance in buildings.
  • Recognize the importance of building envelopes, heating and cooling systems, and lighting sources in retrofitting strategies.
  • Understand how to integrate renewable energy systems (solar, geothermal, biomass) in building design and renovation.
  • Explore the principles of smart buildings, including automation, smart materials, and the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI).
